The OCGS played in the Grafton Morrish finals at Hunstanton last weekend. We fielded a strong team which mixed seasoned players with some of the younger players, two of whom were rookies in this competition.
We were drawn against Bury Grammar in the first round. On a perfect day for golf, Cranleigh made a fast start, and were up in all the matches in the early stages. However Bury clawed their way back into matches 1 and 2 with strong play. Marcus Ferguson Jones and Frazer Moore, our top pair, after a very tight match, lost on the last. Meanwhile our third pair, David Hobden and James Boyle finished strongly to win 3&2. A couple of putts to win the match failed to drop for Tony Whitty and Marc Sadler in the deciding match, which ended up all square after 18. On to extra holes. Having halved the 19th in par, an unfortunate lie in the rough on the 20th scuppered our chances.
Well played to all – the quality of golf in all the matches was consistently high, and once again we were a whisker away from success.
