The Mellin 2013

Max Hunt reports:-

THE MELLIN SALVER:
We had a convincing win against Sherborne in the first round winning by a margin of 2 ½ to ½ with each of our three pairs playing well within themselves. The team went into the second round against a good Bradfield side with quiet confidence but alas it was not to be Cranleigh’s year and we went down badly losing all three matches by large margins.

Our performance this year belies the real potential of our squad and I remain optimistic for our chances of repeating our 2006/7 successes in the near future. We have the ability but just need to find that extra consistency and I am sure we can then lift the Salver again.

My sincere thanks to the team of Richard Williams and John Schofield, Andrew Cronk and David Westcott, Jonathan Williams and Martin Riddiford who gave of their best but regrettably it just was not meant to be in 2013!

THE PETER BURLES SALVER:
We won the first round 2/1 again against Sherborne with our first pair of Mickey Moore and Ian Borrow seeing us through a close run play-off having earlier won their match by 6/5. In the afternoon we lost 2/0 to Aldenham after our first pair lost an exciting match at the 18th hole. Again a big thank you to our team of Mickey Moore, Ian Borrow, John Bowman, Robin Elsdon- Dew and Derek Lyons.

THE BUNNY MILLARD SALVER:
We were represented in the over 75’s salver by Bobby Stovold and Robin Sitwell. It is always challenging to qualify for the semi -finals which is decided by the best four stapleford scores. This year the cut-off was 24 points which playing off scratch is a high score but regrettably we were unable to gain sufficient points.

We must now look forward to the 2014 tournament which will take place on July 10th – 12th in the hope of much better results than we achieved in 2013. Next year will be my last as team manager which will then be my eighth so maybe I can “go out on a high” by our winning the Mellin in the same way as Bobby Stovold managed in 2006 in his last year as manager!
